A school deputy principal has died in a horrific road accident that occurred in the Mahakumbugollaewa area on the A9 main road connecting Medawachchiya and Vavuniya. Poonewa Police state that considering the short period of 24 hours in this road section, two accidents have been reported, in which three people have lost their lives.




The unfortunate person who died was a 58-year-old teacher named Champa Subasinghe, who served as the Deputy Principal of Pahalagalkandegama School. She met with this accident yesterday (18) morning while traveling by motorcycle from her home to her workplace, the school.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by the police, the teacher entered the main road from a side road connecting to it on her scooter-type motorcycle. She then turned her motorcycle from the left lane she was riding in towards the right and rode forward for about 20 meters. At that moment, a Kandy - Vavuniya SLTB bus, which was traveling behind her towards Vavuniya in the designated left lane, attempted to overtake the motorcycle. It has been revealed that the accident occurred when the motorcycle collided with the body of the bus.




With this severe collision, the head of the motorcycle rider, the deputy principal, was severed from her body, and she breathed her last at the scene. Following the accident, the involved Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus and its driver have been arrested by Poonewa Police. Poonewa Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
