
The police discovered the mysteriously deceased body of a woman inside a car parked in the parking lot of Theldeniya Base Hospital yesterday, the 17th, in the evening. Theldeniya Police Station OIC, Headquarters Chief Police Inspector M.D.
Chandrapala, based on information received, initiated these investigations. As the doors of the car containing the body were locked, police officers had to break open the doors to examine the deceased body.Police investigations have revealed that the woman who mysteriously died was a resident of the Weligama area. Police state that she was a 34-year-old named Rathnayake Pathiranage Shyama Darshani, a resident of Kurundu Koratuwa Palalla, Weligama, who worked as a physiotherapist at Ampara Hospital. The Theldeniya Police also state that her brother had previously filed a complaint with the Nuwara Eliya Police Station regarding her disappearance.
Preliminary investigations into the incident have revealed that the woman had gone to Nuwara Eliya for a holiday with a 35-year-old man residing in Gannoruwa, Kandy, and had returned. Information has also been received that she had stayed in a hotel in the Nuwara Eliya area from 2026.06.03 to 2026.06.16. Further investigations have revealed that the first phone call to the Theldeniya Police Station regarding the deceased body, initially made by an unknown person, was made by the person believed to be the deceased woman's boyfriend.
Upon learning of the incident, Theldeniya Magistrate Kamal Sanjaya Jayathilaka visited the scene where the body was found and conducted the magisterial inquiry. Additionally, Theldeniya Hospital's Judicial Medical Officer, Ms. Upuli Bandara, also arrived at the location and conducted preliminary medical examinations. The Magistrate has ordered the police to conduct a post-mortem judicial medical examination on the body and report the findings to the court, and accordingly, the body has been placed in the mortuary of Theldeniya Hospital for the post-mortem examination.
The exact cause of this death has not yet been revealed, and the police are conducting extensive investigations to determine whether it was a homicide or a death that occurred in some other manner. The police state that the death is a great mystery and suspect it could be a murder. The Theldeniya Police have also reported these facts to the Nuwara Eliya Headquarters Police. Under the supervision of Theldeniya Divisional Senior Superintendent of Police Harsha Amarasinghe, Theldeniya Police Headquarters OIC Chief Police Inspector M.D. Chandrapala and the Nuwara Eliya Police are jointly conducting further investigations into this mysterious death.
