Nalanda College Head Prefect's 'leak' incident

A highly controversial incident that has caused a stir in social media and political spheres over the past few days, targeting Nalanda College, a prestigious Buddhist school located in Colombo 10, is currently under discussion. It is reported that four video clips related to this story have been leaked, allegedly concerning an illicit relationship between the head prefect appointed for the 2025/2026 academic year of the college and four female teachers from the same college. It is also said that either one of the teachers' husbands or a friend of the student made this revelation.

However, the police, the college, or the alumni association have not officially confirmed this incident, and no official response has been issued regarding the spreading rumors to date.

Amidst a controversial buzz on social media searching for 'leaked videos,' alleged photos of the incident and photos of the teachers are being circulated. A political commentator, pointing out that this incident is not recent but occurred in 2025, states that a deliberate smear campaign has been created before Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya attends a special event at this school today (26). However, various opinions are being expressed on social media about this incident, affirming that 'there is no smoke without fire.' 

Some say that several tele-dramas currently airing have provided impetus for such incidents. This has managed to highlight numerous social, political, and cultural issues beyond a mere school incident. The 19-year-old student had himself recorded the video calls and shared footage with the teachers, and subsequently, when these visuals were released online through one of his friends, the incident spread like wildfire. One opinion on social media is that this incident has been weaponized to fuel arguments against introducing subjects like sex education into the school system.

However, when analyzing this incident not only from a political but also from a social perspective, it has been interpreted that the position of head prefect in leading boys' schools has become a powerful tool that even attracts female teachers. Especially the shortage of male teachers and the abundance of female teachers in boys' schools have further complicated this situation. Some have pointed out that the necessity to work closely with students for extended periods during sports and extracurricular activities poses a risk of blurring the boundaries between teachers and students.

Furthermore, this incident has brought to light a serious issue regarding modern technology and privacy. The damage caused by recording an extremely private conversation or interaction between two individuals and it falling into the hands of a third party is not insignificant. In this context, the student has faced strong social backlash for betraying the teachers' trust by recording those visuals and failing to secure them. The unrestricted freedom children gain with access to technology and the lack of proper control over smartphone usage have directly contributed to such tragedies. 

On the other hand, the behavior of society, which shares these video clips on social media, enjoys them, and is inclined to criticize the physical appearance and privacy of the women involved, has also been met with strong disgust, and it has been described as a mindset of deriving satisfaction from the destruction of others (Voyeurism). It is reported that school authorities have acted swiftly to dissolve the relevant student prefect board and remove the individuals involved from the school, but no official confirmation has been received yet. This incident is not an isolated event limited to one school or a few individuals; such illicit relationships and sexual abuses occur daily in many places in society like offices, universities, tuition classes, and public transport services, but they often go unnoticed and suppressed by society. 

The main reason this incident is special is the social status of the parties involved and its publicity through digital media. The true tragedy behind this incident is the deterioration of trust and humanity. A female teacher is a figure who deserves respect akin to a mother, and a student is a child who needs care. The breakdown of this fundamental social relationship and its exploitation for commercial or political purposes is extremely tragic.
