The body of a young woman who went missing while staying at an apartment complex in the Nuwara Eliya area has been found by the police in a car parked in the parking lot near Teldeniya Hospital. The young woman who died mysteriously has been identified as Shyama Darshani, a 34-year-old who worked as a physiotherapist at Ampara General Hospital.
In connection with her death, the police are currently seeking public assistance to arrest her boyfriend, Dinesh Dissanayake, a software engineer residing in Gangoda, Kandy, on suspicion. The origin of this incident dates back to a complaint made to the Nuwara Eliya Police yesterday morning by a resident of Kotawewa Thalawa area. He had informed the police that his sister was residing in an apartment in Nuwara Eliya and had not eaten for several days, requesting assistance to check the location. She had arrived at this apartment complex on June 3rd and had told her brother over the phone that she had not eaten for three days. She had also informed a psychiatrist at Ampara Hospital over the phone that she was under severe mental stress, and the doctor had advised her to immediately go to the nearest hospital, meet a psychiatrist, and seek treatment. However, her mobile phone became inactive after approximately 4:00 PM on the 16th, prompting her brother to seek police assistance.
According to the complaint, a team of Nuwara Eliya police officers went to the apartment and inspected it, but no one was there. Subsequent examination of the CCTV footage of the premises revealed that the young woman's boyfriend arrived at the house around 9:50 PM on the 16th. He stayed there for nearly 40 minutes, and the footage showed him carrying the unconscious young woman out and putting her into a car around 10:30 PM. It is not clear from the CCTV whether the young woman was already murdered or merely unconscious at that time. Her face also appeared to be covered with a black cloth. This manner of her being taken away was recorded by only one CCTV camera in the building, and as it was an apartment, there were not as many staff members as in a hotel, and there is no evidence yet that anyone witnessed her being taken away at night.
While the Nuwara Eliya Police had alerted all police stations regarding the disappearance of the young woman, the Teldeniya Police Station OIC in Kandy, nearly 100 kilometers from Nuwara Eliya, received a phone call from an unknown person. The caller stated that there was a female dead body in a car parked in the parking lot near Teldeniya Hospital. Acting swiftly, Teldeniya police officers went to the location, opened the locked car door, and found the body, covered with a black cloth, on the front passenger seat. Subsequent investigations revealed that it was the body of the young woman who had disappeared from Nuwara Eliya.
If the boyfriend had taken the young woman to be hospitalized, taking her to Teldeniya past several nearby hospitals is a puzzle. Furthermore, if this was done with the intention of murder and concealment, one would not inform the police while the body was still in the vehicle, which raises further questions.
According to police investigations, it has been revealed that the suspect boyfriend himself brought the dead body to this location and then made the phone call to the Teldeniya Police Station OIC. A romantic relationship between the two had begun about eight months ago. The young woman, hoping to go to Canada with her boyfriend, had obtained approximately 15 million rupees (1.5 crore) as a loan with interest from a bank and several individuals and given it to her boyfriend. However, as the foreign travel had not materialized yet, creditors were pressuring her for repayment, causing her severe mental distress, according to the police.
Further investigations have revealed that the car used to transport the young woman's body belongs to another girlfriend of the suspect boyfriend, who resides in the Ampara area. The post-mortem examination conducted on the body has yielded an open verdict, and it has not yet been definitively confirmed whether this was indeed a murder or a death due to another cause. The public is requested to immediately inform the police if they have any information regarding the suspect Dinesh Dissanayake, and further investigations into the incident are being conducted under the direct supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Samarakoone Banda, in charge of the Nuwara Eliya Division.
