An incident has been reported from Jaffna where a garland of slippers was placed on a large banner displaying the image of Member of Parliament Arjuna Ramanathan, which was exhibited on a main road near Jaffna city. The approximately 10-foot-tall banner was erected near the Chinnakadai area on the main road in Jaffna, and it is reported that various derogatory phrases insulting the MP were also inscribed on it.
His statement made last week at an event with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, where he delivered a speech and pledged the support of the Eelam diaspora to ensure the victory of the Rajapaksas, sparked controversy.Additionally, criticisms were mounting against him for acting outside parliamentary decorum, using obscene and inappropriate language, and attempting to disrupt a coordination committee meeting held recently in Jaffna. Specifically, this protest intensified further after video footage showing his extremely disrespectful behavior at the Thellippalai Divisional Coordination Committee meeting held on Thursday rapidly spread across social media.
It is suspected that an unidentified group displayed this banner during the night, with the inscription "Member of Parliament Arjuna Rajapaksa, a despicable birth" and a garland of slippers hung over the MP's photograph. As photos and videos related to this incident circulated on social media, MP Arjuna Ramanathan arrived at the location in his car around 10:00 AM on Friday. Media reports indicate that he himself tore down the banner, loaded it into his car, and took it away from the site.
