An Italian woman has died and nine other people have been injured in a severe fire that broke out yesterday (June 19) near midday at a famous tourist hotel in Bayahíbe, Dominican Republic. The fire reportedly started around 11:00 AM local time at the luxurious hotel complex named "Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach," located in the La Altagracia province of the Dominican Republic.
Due to this unexpected incident in a region that attracts tourists worldwide with its white sandy beaches and clear Caribbean Sea, authorities evacuated nearly 1,700 people, including foreign tourists staying at the hotel at the time, to safe locations. The victim of this incident has been identified as 46-year-old Francesca Valentino, a resident of Caserta, Italy. Severe respiratory difficulties caused by inhaling the thick smoke from the fire were the cause of death. Emergency relief officials who arrived at the scene provided her with initial treatment before she was admitted to a medical center in La Romana. However, relief services confirmed that she passed away while receiving treatment there. Additionally, nine other individuals, including hotel guests, staff, and firefighters, were affected by the fire; three of them were hospitalized, while the remaining six received medical treatment at the scene.
Immediately after the fire broke out, hotel staff and security personnel successfully evacuated over 1,690 tourists and staff members without any harm. A large number of panicked tourists ran to the beach and nearby safe zones, and it is reported that a significant number of them were Italian nationals. Guests from the affected hotel were promptly transferred to other unaffected hotel complexes in the area, such as "Viva Palace" and "Catalonia." More than 15 firefighting units were called to control the blaze, and after strenuous efforts, they managed to completely extinguish the fire by evening.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire spread very rapidly due to easily flammable natural materials like coconut leaves, reeds, and bamboo used for roofing on several buildings within the hotel complex, as well as the strong winds prevailing at the time. As a result, severe damage occurred to many common areas, including the hotel's main reception office, but no building completely collapsed. Scenes circulated on international and social media showed a large plume of black smoke rising above the Caribbean coastline and some tourists even running towards the sea to escape the fire. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and a formal investigation is underway.
Against the backdrop of over 5.6 million tourists visiting the Dominican Republic, a leading Caribbean tourist destination, in just the first five months of the year, this incident has once again sparked a discussion about the risks of using natural roofing materials in tropical tourist hotel design. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts is cooperating with government authorities regarding this incident and has limited the issuance of official statements. The Italian government has also expressed its sorrow over this tragedy and offered condolences to the family of the deceased woman. However, the country's Emergency Operations Center emphasizes that this incident has not had a long-term impact on the overall tourism industry in the Bayahíbe region, and other tourist activities are proceeding normally and safely.
