The death of the Assistant Director of the Department of External Resources at the Ministry of Finance, who was interdicted on charges of misappropriating USD 2.5 million in public funds, has been ruled a suicide. This conclusion was reached by a committee of expert forensic doctors appointed to conduct the post-mortem examination, and the Sri Lanka Police confirm that all injuries on the deceased's body were self-inflicted.
The deceased has been identified as an officer named Ranga Rajapaksha. His body was found last Friday (30) in the garden of his home in the Kuliyapitiya area. According to the police, his daughter was the first to see her father lying in the garden, and she subsequently informed other family members. Police officers who arrived at the scene observed several bloodstains near the body. Authorities also reported that the deceased officer had several injuries, including cut wounds on one leg and an arm. Additionally, a small knife was found by the police near the location where the body was discovered. To definitively ascertain whether this death was a murder, suicide, or an accident, the police initially launched an investigation treating it as a suspicious death. Accordingly, the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate visited the scene on Friday and conducted the magisterial inquiry. Subsequently, the body was transferred to the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
