Mr. Chris Fuhrer Ferdinand, a Swiss national and the former husband of Ms. Geetha Kumarasinghe, who is a former State Minister of Women and Child Affairs and a veteran film actress, has passed away.
Talangama Police confirm that Mr. Ferdinand, who was 81 years old, passed away while staying at his daughter's residence in Jayanthipura, Battaramulla. On the morning of the 20th, his family informed the police due to suspicion when he did not wake up. Subsequently, Talangama police officers who arrived at the scene found him deceased in his bed.
Ms. Premalatha Abeywardena, the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths and Justice of the Peace, who conducted the on-site investigation into the incident, ordered the body to be sent to the Colombo Police Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Following the post-mortem, the body is to be taken to Switzerland for final rites, in accordance with the deceased's last wishes. Mr. Chris Fuhrer, who was married to Ms. Geetha Kumarasinghe for nearly four decades, had a daughter named Tharika Fiona with her. This marriage resulted in Ms. Kumarasinghe acquiring dual Swiss citizenship, which later initiated a significant legal debate in her political career, leading to the loss of her parliamentary seat under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
She later renounced her Swiss citizenship and actively re-entered Sri Lankan politics, and subsequently, they legally separated in 2018. He was a leading Swiss businessman who held significant shareholdings in several businesses in Sri Lanka, including Vidullanka PLC. Furthermore, he made a considerable contribution to Sri Lanka's economy and the cinema industry by providing financial support for award-winning cinematic creations produced by Ms. Geetha Kumarasinghe and by establishing local garment factories.
