How a group of students averted a major accident after an American school bus driver lost consciousness

In the United States, when a school bus driver suddenly lost consciousness, a group of students traveling in the bus collectively took control of the vehicle, administered first aid to the driver, and managed to avert a major accident.

According to reports from Associated Press and The New York Times news services, this incident occurred on the 22nd of last month on Highway 603 near Kiln, Mississippi. The bus driver, 46-year-old Lea Taylor, suddenly lost consciousness while driving due to an acute asthma attack. At the time, nearly forty middle school students, aged between 11 and 15, were traveling in the bus.

As soon as the driver lost consciousness and slumped over the steering wheel, twelve-year-old Jackson Cashen, who was sitting behind her, immediately sprang forward, grabbed the steering wheel, and guided the bus, which was veering off the road, back onto its proper path. Subsequently, the driver regained some consciousness and managed to slow down the vehicle, but struggling to breathe and clutching her chest, she again lost consciousness. At that moment, another twelve-year-old student, Darius Clark, came forward, applied the brakes, and brought the bus to a complete stop. He later stated that when he pressed the brakes, the bus was moving at such a speed that he felt he might be thrown through the front windshield.

Meanwhile, student Destiny Cornelius checked the driver's condition and arranged for her to receive the necessary medication. Further controlling the situation, Kerri Clark called 911, and Mac Kenzie Finch reported the incident to the school district's transportation department.

Driver Lea Taylor later told the media that when she regained consciousness, one student was holding medication to her face and instructing her to breathe. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the children for saving her life and the lives of everyone on the bus. The local education office announced that all students returned home safely without any loss of life, and authorities further stated that they were extremely proud of the students for acting as a team with great responsibility and without panicking.
