Although there is a saying in society that a woman's mind is a mystery, what can even the goddess of justice do when it becomes so complex that even the devil cannot understand it?
Yesterday (13), a strict order was issued to arrest a woman who had seriously misused the Supreme Court's permission to travel abroad to see her child and had not returned to the country. Expressing his astonishment in open court, Supreme Court Justice Dilip Nawaz stated, "Even the devil cannot understand a woman's mind."
This woman, Nipuni Attanayake, first sought the court's help expecting a divorce settlement of ten million rupees from her first husband, Viraj Gunathilaka. Due to not receiving the promised money in that case heard at the Kaduwela District Court, she went to court again under the Civil Procedure Code to recover it. However, by then she had already married someone else and given birth to a child, and her new husband and child were residing in Dubai.
Despite an interim injunction preventing her from leaving the country due to existing legal issues, the Supreme Court granted her permission on humanitarian grounds to travel abroad for a week to see her child living in Dubai. A three-judge panel consisting of Supreme Court Justices Dilip Nawaz, Sampath Abeykoon, and Gihan Kulatunga granted this relief based on her pledge to reappear before the court on the due date. However, she misled the court by submitting other forged documents, claiming them to be passports and tickets, and did not return to Sri Lanka as promised.
Such misleading of the Supreme Court by a person who sought the protection of the law is not merely a breach of promise but a serious contempt of the entire judicial system. The judge informed Attorney Harith de Mel, who appeared for the respondent party, to immediately take legal action against the petitioner under the charge of contempt of court. The Controller General of Immigration and Emigration has already been ordered to arrest her at the airport as soon as she sets foot in Sri Lanka and present her to the Supreme Court.
Having come before the law seeking millions in compensation for an injustice she suffered, she has now become an internationally wanted fugitive, paying the price for a serious mistake she made herself.
