Latest clinical trial data reveal that a daily pill can prevent weight regain even after stopping weight-loss injections. Scientists indicate that this drug, known as 'orforglipron', can help patients prevent over 200 obesity-related diseases.
It is especially expected to be a great support in preventing overweight individuals from developing obesity.Previous studies had revealed that many patients who stopped using weekly GLP-1 injections regained their weight within a year, typically regaining two-thirds of the weight they had lost. According to new research data presented at the 2026 European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul, this more affordable daily pill can successfully maintain that weight instead of injections. It is reported that about 30 percent of adults in Britain suffer from obesity, and most of them are already taking several types of medication for other health problems.
In this clinical trial, patients who had received the 'tirzepatide' injection and then stopped it, successfully maintained about 75% of their lost weight when they took this new daily pill. Similarly, it has been observed that about 80% of those who used the 'semaglutide' injection were able to control their weight with this pill. Switching to this pill has also helped patients maintain healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.
According to specialist doctors, many people prefer a pill over injections due to the cost of treatment with injections, storage difficulties, and personal preference. Scientists state that while these new drugs are cheaper to produce than injections, pills do not have the same high level of weight loss capability as injections. However, researchers believe that obesity, like other chronic diseases, is a condition that requires long-term treatment, and this new discovery will be an important milestone for the future of weight management in patients.
