A 16-year-old student reportedly committed suicide by overdosing on medication in the Girandurukotte area, unable to bear the advice to end a romantic relationship with a young man and focus more on her studies. Many sensitive details regarding this incident were revealed during the sudden death inquiry held recently (09) at the Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital.
This girl, who resided in the Girandurukotte area, left home on the 2nd, stating she was attending a tuition class. However, she did not go to the class that day and was observed by police officers while staying near the Rathkinda Reservoir with her boyfriend. Consequently, both of them were brought to the police for further questioning, and after their parents were summoned and advised, the girl was handed over to her mother.
As per police instructions, the mother went to the police station the next morning with the girl's birth certificate. At that time, the elder sister, who was at home, informed the mother by phone that her younger sister had suddenly fallen ill and was unconscious. The mother immediately returned home, saw the girl in a critical condition, and with the help of neighbors, admitted her to the Girandurukotte Hospital.
This student was later transferred to Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital for further treatment, where she received care in the intensive care unit, battling death for over six days. However, the doctors' efforts to save her life were in vain, and she passed away on the 9th.
This inquest was conducted before Mr. H. M. T. B. Herath, the Acting Inquirer into Sudden Deaths for Hasalaka Ulpathgama. During the inquest, the mother and elder sister of the deceased girl gave evidence under the direction of Sergeant Chandrasoma of the Girandurukotte Police. It was further revealed that the severe distress caused by the advice from her mother, sister, and the police to end her romantic relationship led to this unfortunate decision.
