Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dissanayake yesterday (08) ordered the release of Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne on a personal bail of one million rupees, in connection with a case filed by a female pilot of a private airline seeking to establish the paternity of her child. Mr. Chamika Karunaratne, who had not appeared before the court on a previous occasion, was present in court yesterday with legal assistance.

Attorney Jerusha Thambiah, appearing for the complainant Miss Sewwandi Inoka Senadheera, stated before the court that the defendant had maintained a relationship with her client promising marriage, but later denied it, and if he does not marry, he should pay maintenance for the child. The complainant also requested an order for a DNA test to scientifically confirm that Chamika Karunaratne is the child's father.

However, Attorney Asela Rekawa, appearing for Chamika Karunaratne, strongly rejected this request, arguing that the court has no power to compel a DNA test and that the full responsibility of proving the child's paternity should rest with the complainant. The defense counsel further emphasized before the court that while his client admits to having a sexual relationship with the complainant, he completely refuses to accept paternity of the child or appear for a DNA test for that purpose.

The lawyer further presented arguments for the defendant's innocence, stating that there is evidence that the complainant had taken photographs with an Indian national pilot while she was pregnant, and that this Indian national had acknowledged the child as his own via social media. After considering the facts presented by both parties, the Magistrate ordered the suspect to be released on bail and decided to postpone the further hearing of the case until January 30, 2026.
