Colombo Additional Magistrate Liyan Warusawithana yesterday (11) ordered that the case against Mrs. Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who is accused of obtaining a diplomatic passport irregularly by submitting forged documents, be recalled on the 25th. When facts regarding this incident were reported before the court, the accused Shashi Weerawansa, who is currently released on bail, appeared before the open court.
Attorney Buddhika Chandrasekara, appearing for the defense, informed the court that before leading evidence in the trial, the defense needs an opportunity to examine the data system related to computer-generated documents submitted as evidence in this case. The lawyer further emphasized that since that access, which should be granted to the defense under the Evidence Ordinance, has not yet been provided, the trial cannot proceed.
The Additional Magistrate, having considered this request made by the defense, ordered that the Criminal Investigation Department's (CID) stance on whether to grant the defense access to examine the relevant computer system should be informed on the next court date. Accordingly, it was decided to recall the case on May 25th, and on that day, the position of the investigating divisions regarding this request is to be presented to the court.
