With the increase in fuel prices, school children's transport vehicles have decided to increase their fares by 5% effective from today (10).
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Lalith Chandrasiri Fernando, President of the All Ceylon School Children's Transport Association, stated that although fuel prices were revised on several occasions, no change was made to transport fares due to the prevailing situation in the country.
However, he further stated that due to the increase in fuel prices by Rs. 22 this time, transport fares would also have to be increased.
The president also told the media that this decision was reached after discussions with other associations.
Accordingly, Mr. Lalith Chandrasiri Fernando stated that the relevant fare revision will be effective from today.
Further commenting, Mr. Lalith Chandrasiri Fernando said,
“When we woke up, the oil prices had suddenly increased... As a transport association, we decided to increase fares by 5%... Accordingly, if a school child's fare is Rs. 10,000, the fare will increase by Rs. 500... The increase in fuel prices by Rs. 22 is severely felt by us in the transport sector... We had to make this decision, albeit reluctantly... We made this decision after discussing with other associations and officials.”
