Mr. Sanath Jayasuriya, the head coach of the Sri Lanka national cricket team, is scheduled to step down from his position today (28), and the match against Pakistan at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium under this year's T20 World Cup tournament will be his final assignment.
He had officially informed the authorities at the beginning of the year that he would step down from coaching after this World Cup tournament, regardless of its outcome. He has also confirmed to the media that he will not change his decision, even though his contract period still remains. Despite the high hopes of cricket fans that the team would at least reach the semi-finals due to Sri Lanka hosting this year's tournament, it is reported that Mr. Jayasuriya is deeply saddened by the team's early exit from the tournament in the initial round.
Looking at his coaching history, Mr. Jayasuriya first joined the team as an assistant consultant in December 2023, and then took over the team's responsibility as interim coach for the series against India in July 2024. Subsequently, he was officially appointed as the full-time head coach of the Sri Lanka team in October of the same year.
During his entire tenure as head coach, the Sri Lanka team participated in 74 matches, representing all formats of international cricket. Of these, the Sri Lanka team recorded victories in 34 matches, lost 38 matches, and 2 matches ended without a result.
