An attack on a mosque every 5 days in Britain

According to the latest data released by a government partner agency that monitors anti-Muslim hate crimes in Britain, it has been revealed that one mosque is attacked every five days in the country. Over the past year, more than 70 attacks targeting mosques have been reported in the UK, including intimidation, violence, property damage, harassment, anti-Muslim hate speech, online abuse, and acts of vandalism.

London, Greater Manchester, and West Midlands have been identified as the three main regions where these attacks are most prevalent. Nine separate attacks have been reported in London alone, and one mosque in Birmingham has been attacked three times in the past 12 months. Data from the British Home Office indicates that anti-Muslim hate crimes in England and Wales have increased by 19% in the 12-month period ending March 2025.

The British Muslim Trust, warning of an increase in these attacks, calls for an urgent response from the government. Its Chief Executive, Akila Ahmed, states that given the continuous rise in attacks against mosques, the government must take every possible step to ensure their safety. In response to this situation, the government announced earlier this year that it would provide up to £40 million under a program to fund physical security measures for mosques, such as CCTV cameras, alarm systems, fences, and security personnel services.

However, according to Home Office guidelines, there is a high probability that funding applications will be rejected if they do not include strong evidence and a clear explanation of the risk. Akila Ahmed has urged ministers to remove these requirements, as they are a major barrier to obtaining funding. The British Muslim Trust points out that the process of obtaining these funds is very difficult, and some applicants have had to wait up to 18 months for funding. Furthermore, monitoring groups note that many applications have been rejected without any explanation. Commenting on this situation, a spokesperson for the Home Office stated that they acknowledge Muslims in the UK face a dangerous level of religiously motivated hate crime and are working to process all funding applications as quickly as possible.
