Issuing a special order to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by Fort Magistrate Mr. Isuru Nettikumara, it has been informed that the property, including gems and gold jewelry belonging to a brother of the main suspects connected to the Easter attack, should be released to him within a week.
This property is claimed by Il Ahmed, a brother of Ibrahim Ilham Ahmed, who carried out a suicide bomb attack on the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo, and Insaf Ahmed, who died by detonating a bomb at Mahawila Gardens in Dematagoda. The CID had taken these valuable items into their custody from the house where the relevant suspects resided, located in Mahawila Gardens, Dematagoda.
The Magistrate issued this order after considering a request made to the court by Mr. Il Ahmed through an attorney, asking for the return of his property. It was pointed out in court that although the preceding magistrate had given the CID sufficient time to raise objections, they had not presented any arguments. Furthermore, it was revealed that even though another judge had called for reports from the CID regarding the preceding magistrate's order, they had disregarded those orders as well.
Accordingly, the Magistrate strongly emphasized that if the Criminal Investigation Department fails to implement the court order and release the relevant property to the owner within the stipulated week, severe legal action will be taken against them under the charge of contempt of court.
In connection with the series of suicide attacks targeting Catholic churches and star-class hotels on Easter Sunday, the CID is currently conducting investigations against eight suspects, including Mohamed Cassim Mohamed Zahran alias Mohamed Adhu Ubaida, the leader of the National Thowheeth Jama'ath organization, and his wife Abdul Cader Fathima Hadiya. Cases have been filed against some of these suspects before the High Court, while others have been released. Meanwhile, suspects A.H.M. Rifas and Mohamed Nilam, who are out on bail, also appeared before the court when the case was called, and the case is scheduled to be called again on June 17.
