The construction work of the Kandy, Gatambe flyover, which had been halted for several years, was recommenced this afternoon (06) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Although the preliminary work of this project commenced in 2021 with an estimated cost of Rs. 14.37 billion under a loan assistance from the Hungarian government, the loan assistance had to be suspended due to the economic crisis that arose in the country during the past period, causing the bridge's work to halt. However, the construction work of this project, which has been restarted with an investment of Rs. 12.27 billion in domestic funds, is planned to be completed within the next 22 months.

This 374-meter long flyover will be constructed along William Gopallawa Mawatha, starting from the right bank of the Mahaweli River on Gannoruwa Road and passing over the Gatambe junction and the railway line. The auxiliary flyover, constructed along Peradeniya Road, will connect to the main flyover above the railway line, and from there, it will be designed to connect to William Gopallawa Mawatha with three lanes.

The main objective of implementing this project is to alleviate the severe traffic congestion that has long existed around the Gatambe junction, as well as to avoid delays in traffic movement caused by the closure of the railway crossing.
