Kandy's Mahamaya Girls' College has been closed indefinitely due to the risk of a landslide.
Principal Sashikala Senadheera stated that the reason for the closure of Mahamaya Girls' College, which had reopened on the 16th, is the prevailing risk of landslides in several locations along Rajapihilla Mawatha, situated above the school.
Following an inspection of Rajapihilla Mawatha by a team from the National Building Research Organisation, it was reported that there is a significant risk of landslides in the area above the school, especially with the prevailing rainy weather conditions.
The hilly area extending above Mahamaya Girls' College up to Rajapihilla Mawatha is home to numerous hotels and residences. Should a landslide occur, there is a heightened risk that these buildings could also collapse onto the school premises.
