Hunnasgiriya Homes Hit by Landslides; Three Injured

Three individuals have been injured after two houses were affected by landslides in the Hunnasgiriya area of Udu Dumbara, Kandy District, according to the Kandy District Disaster Management Centre. This situation has arisen due to continuous heavy rainfall experienced in some parts of the district since yesterday (17) evening.

Mr. Indika Ranaweera, Deputy Director of the Kandy Disaster Management Centre, stated that since this landslide occurred near a safe centre, steps were taken to temporarily relocate 90 individuals who were safely housed there to the Rantambe Training Centre.

Mr. Ranaweera further urged the public to limit the use of the Kandy-Mahiyangana road as much as possible due to the risk of rocks and earth embankments collapsing onto it amidst the ongoing heavy rainfall, and to avoid using the road at night. He emphasized that if the road must be used, extreme caution should be exercised regarding potential rock and earth collapses.
