Driver flees with valuables of British couple of tourists after asking them to push the vehicle!

A diver of a hired vehicle who was providing transport to a British couple coming from Ella to Kataragama was stranded with their property being robbed in the process, Weerawila police reports.

According to police, the incident is as follows. The said couple has come to the island for a tour in
the country and had found lodging at a hotel in Ella. They had later come in a hired vehicle to proceed to Kataragama from there. The car was stopped at Weerawila wewa bund experiencing a technical fault in the vehicle. Efforts taken by the driver to revive the vehicle had come to nought. At that moment the driver has asked the couple to alight from the car and give the vehicle a push. Just as the driver suggested, when pushing the vehicle it had come to life. What the said driver has then done was without waiting for the couple to get inside the car, has darted away. There had been over Rs. ten lakhs cash and valuables inside the vehicle.

The touring couple had lodged an entry with Weerawila police; but neither the vehicle nor the driver have been found. Police suspect whether the technical fault in the vehicle was something fraudulently committed with the ulterior motive of this looting. Investigations are underway.
