How UK Immigration Changes Will Affect Sri Lankan Immigrants

The new immigration rules proposed by Kemi Badenoch could make it harder for Sri Lankan immigrants in the UK to become British citizens.

Longer Wait for Citizenship

Right now, immigrants can apply for British citizenship after six years (five years of living in the UK plus one year after getting Indefinite Leave to Remain). Under the new rules, they will need to live in the UK for at least 15 years before applying for a passport.

Higher Costs and Restrictions

The time required to get Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) will increase from five years to ten years
Immigrants must earn a high salary to qualify, especially if they want to bring family members.
Those who claim benefits or need social housing will be banned from applying for citizenship.
Anyone with a criminal record will never be allowed to become a British citizen.

Impact on Sri Lankan Immigrants

Sri Lankans who were planning to apply for citizenship soon may have to wait much longer.
Those on lower salaries may struggle to qualify for ILR or citizenship.
Families might find it harder to reunite if income requirements increase.
If the rule is applied retroactively to 2021, many Sri Lankans already in the UK may have to restart their journey to citizenship.
These changes could make life more difficult for Sri Lankan immigrants, as they will have to wait longer, meet stricter conditions, and possibly face higher financial burdens before becoming British citizens.
