Toddler who went unawares behind and got into three-wheeler ... gets thrown out and run over

An unfortunate incident is related of a niece, a toddler aged 2 and half years who has run behind her grandfather's three-wheeler and had died in the circumstances. This incidence was reported from Polonnaruwa Aranaganwila. The incident has taken place at about 8.30 in the night day-before-yesterday (14).

This toddler had been in the home with her mother and father as usual

when the grandmother too had spent some time in their company and had then set out to go to his house around 8.30 in the night. At that time, without the knowledge of those in the home and the grandfather, the 2 and a half year old toddler had run behind the grandmother and had tried to get into the three-wheeler with the hope of going with him. The 63 year old grandfather who had started the three-wheeler and gone only a short distance had noticed something being run over by the vehicle. He had finally realised that it was none other than his own niece who had got run over in this manner.

The toddler who sustained serious injury was already dead by the time she was admitted to hospital. It was W.G. Olina Prabhani Wijeybandara, the 2 years and 6 month year old toddler living at No. 242, Dalukana, Manampitiya who has thus passed away from the accident. The suspect 63 year old grandfather connected with the incident was taken into custody and was expected to be produced before Polonnaruwa district courts yesterday (15). Police say that reason for the accident was negligent driving.
