Court refutes request of Maithree
A request made by Presidential Common Candidate Mr. Maithreepala Sirisena to issue an enjoining order to media channels Derana, National Rupavahini, Hiru and Swarnavahini where excerpts of a speech made by him saying "Obai raja .... oba apata deviyek" praising
President Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksha had been rejected by District Courts. This rejection had been made by Judge Mrs. Sujatha Alahapperuma.
The judge had arrived at this decision after considering points presented by lawyers on both sides.
What Mr. Sirisena says in his complaint is that the speech made in the year 2009 is being made use of at this Presidential Election as a propaganda-weapon against him and is being broadcast once again and that it violates instructions issued by the Election Commissioner expected to be adhered to by Presidential candidates.
Excerpts of this speech is being broadcast across these channels as a paid-advertisement.
President's Counsel Mr. Ronald Perera appeared on behalf of Mr. Sirisena while a group of lawyers inclusive of President's Counsel Alisabri Qvera de Soysa appeared for the defence party.
