Father and mother of Biology First: Biology teachers
Father of Maths First: Lawyer; Mother, Doctor
Father and mother of Commerce first: no job

Further information is received about A/L students whose results were released and had come First in the island, from each subject.

As such, it was revealed that the father and mother of the student who came First in the island in Biology are Biology teachers. The student in this case is, Amaya Mahatantila of Eheliyagoda Madhya Maha Vidyalaya. Even in school her class teacher had been her mother who taught Biology and incidentally her father also happens to be a Biology tuition master. She has one brother.

It was also reported that she had secured 163 marks at the scholarship examination too and had even become third in the whole island at the O/L examination.

Student Amaya Mahatantila says, "Where doing my schooling I also attended private classes. Actually, I spent more time on academic work. I hardly paid attention to other extra activities. I mostly studied during the nights. During the first year I studied upto 11 in the night. When the exam was coming closer I studied from 12 to 1 a.m. On each day that I studied like that, my father and my mother was awake with me.

Of course to pass the A/L exam one has to put more effort into studies than when preparing for the O/Levels. But one should not let it become a problem. Parts or sections of the subject should be read over and over again. If one works systematically, one could triumph like this".

It was Aditha Weerasiri Dias from Richmond College, Galle who came First in Maths in the island this time. Adithya has 2 brothers and one sister. He is the third in the family. His father Weerasiri Dias is an Attorney-at-Law at Baddegama courts. Mother, Rathnaseetha Dias is a doctor at Maha Modera hospital. Adithya had his schooling upto Grade 1 in Church Christ College, Baddegama and was engaged in studies from Year 2 at Richmond College.

He was able to secure 166 marks at the Grade 5 scholarship and was placed 15th in the island at the O/L exam securing A passes.  Adithya Dias spoke about his achievement in this manner. "After my O/L results with the intention of becoming a doctor I followed the A/L Science course of studies; but as the Science subject stream was difficult, after a short time I switched on to Maths. I then studied for the O/L exam in the Maths stream. I of course didn't take part in extra activities in school; but I worked at a target. School-work I did in the same way. After getting up in the morning, I didn't study till late in the night. I did my studies according to a normal routine. Daily work in school, I did the same way. I would engage in educational-work as time would permit. I took maximum use of the lab in school. I watched television only to see news. Actually if one works with a target in mind, it's not difficult to achieve results like this. I sat for the exam with a cool head".

Abeysingha AArachchige Dona Erandi Kanchana from Rathnavali Balika Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, Gampaha came First in the island in the Commerce stream.

Erandi's father has no permanent job and the mother is a domestic. Erandi Kanchana spoke about her achievement.
"I am studying with the hope of becoming a Chartered Accountant. I watch television only after selecting my programmes. I read newspapers ... read books. School-work of that day I finish that same day .... I don't let work get accumulated. It's during night time that I study. Apart from school education, I don't let my interest drift into other directions .... priority is education. My mother and father are suffering so much to give me this education".

It is Methsarani Lokuge of Devi Balika Vidyalaya of Colombo who has won First place in the Arts section. She is the daughter of Mrs. Pradeepa Samarasingha, the principal of Devi Balika Vidyalaya. Methsarani has for sometime been abroad studying for her O/Levels and has displayed her prowess by writing for her A/L exam in the country.

It is understood that Methsarani has written for her O/Levels in Sea Shell islands and had achieved the best results in that country too and further had been able to come second in the world in the subject of Science. She had then come back home to write for her A/L exam in Sri Lanka. In her motherland she has chosen the Arts stream under language subjects.

Methsarani's father and brother are presently resident in Sea Shells and she too had lived in Sea Shells for some years and had gained admission to Devi Balika Vidyalaya for her A/Levels.

She had studied French, English Literature and Economics under the Arts stream and had appeared for the A/Levels in the English medium. She had received her initial education at Kegalle Balika Vidyalaya, Tholangamuwa Madhya Maha Vidyalaya and Mahamaya Vidyalaya in Kandy.

This achievement in Methsarani's own words is as follows: "I got a lot of support from Devi Balika Vidyalaya. The Principal of the school completed the syllabus by the month of January. My mother always used to discuss with me and then take decisions. What I wanted was to follow a different type of subject stream. My objective is to find a job related to diplomat service".

What the student's mother, Devi Balika Vidyalaya Principal said was that her daughter attended school upto the day prior to the exam. The Principal also mentioned that her daughter who lived a simple existence would worship Lord Buddha early in the morning and would engage in meditation as a custom.
