I have studied and come. Cannot allow animal slaughter:
What Police stopped slaughtering has now been stopped by Mervin:
The Chilaw ‘Badrakali kovil’ was arranging to slaughter of Goats and Fowls as done annually. There had been several protests for this exercise which was condemned by several organisations.
When these Goats and Fowls were slaughtered, in addition to protests by many, Police personnel also tried to prevent this cruel act. Police had made representations to the Chilaw courts in this regard. They were of the view that if this was stopped there would be no peace among the different communities.
The additional Magistrate of Chilaw courts R.M.Jayawardena had issued an order on Monday (the day before yesterday), to refrain from killing these animals. However in spite of the court’s order as an alternative the authorities of the Kovil was adamant to have this animal slaughter be done as an offering to the gods had made a decision not to have the slaughtering at the Munneswaran kovil, but to have it at an alternate venue ‘Sohan Kali Kovil’. For the exercise to be carried out on the sly by the area needed was covered with a black cloth. This was made known to Minister Mervin Silva.
The Minister thereafter made use of the powers vested upon him in the correct manner. When the order was delivered not to slaughter no one came to protest but all of them were stunned in silence. Mervyn Silva with his supports ordered to stop this very blatant cruel act.
After this heroic exercise, he disclosed that he had come after gathering knowledge and facts by reading books related to this exercise and explained to the media in this manner:
“In this sacred land in the presence of “Amma Gods, Kali Godess” I do not betray them. To prevent cruel animal slaughter, I have ordered as the Minister of Peoples affairs, to refrain from killing these animals in a very calm and mild manner to prevent its occurrence. If I had done any wrong those who love killing animals could curse me by ‘slashing coconuts' for which I have no hard feelings’.
