ALAWWA TRAIN ACCIDENT

Accident involving 3 trains
3 deaths and 30 odd passengers injured.

The death toll had risen to 3 following the accident involving 3 trains at Alawwa. A train that was halted at the Alawwa railway station had been hit from the rear by the Kandy Intercity train. The train that was stationery had been drawn forward and had collided with another train that was also halted.
The accident had caused damages to the platform intended for passengers of the Kandy bound intercity train. As a result 3 passengers who were on this platform had been killed and altogether a number between 30- 40 have been injured.
It is learnt that it was with great difficulty that passengers who were trapped inside the carriages were taken out. For this exercise certain machineries had to be deployed.
