Female lawyer who scolded police officer while leaving courthouse gate arrested

The court has ordered the release of a female lawyer and another person, who were arrested in connection with an incident of unlawfully obstructing the movement of a police inspector, scolding, threatening, and attempting to assault him within the Trincomalee Magistrate's Court complex, on personal bail of five hundred thousand rupees each. These two suspects, arrested by the Trincomalee Port Police Station, were granted bail after being produced before the court.

A police inspector from the Criminal Victims and Witnesses Assistance and Protection Division appeared for a court proceeding held at the Trincomalee Magistrate's Court on January 27, 2026. After the conclusion of the said case, when the officer attempted to exit through the main gate of the court complex, the victim in that case and the lawyer who appeared on his behalf obstructed the path of the police inspector, scolded him, and threatened him.

Regarding this incident, the relevant police officer lodged a complaint with the Trincomalee Port Police Station, and investigations conducted through CCTV footage and witness statements revealed that the lawyer and the other person together had scolded and attempted to assault the officer. Subsequently, after reporting the facts to the court, summons were issued to the suspects to appear in court on September 02, 2026, and when the case was called on that day, the suspects were ordered to appear before the Trincomalee Port Police the following day.

Accordingly, on September 03, 2026, the suspect lawyer and the other person were arrested after appearing at the Port Police Station and were produced before the court. The court ordered their release on personal bail of 05 hundred thousand rupees each and warned that they would be remanded if they failed to appear on every subsequent court date. The case has been postponed for recall on September 18, 2026. Meanwhile, the suspect lawyer has also lodged a complaint against the relevant police inspector, and the Police Special Investigations Unit is currently conducting investigations into it.
