A person who, in 2019, posed as the youngest billionaire in the country and operated a large-scale financial scam from star-class hotels in Colombo, has been arrested by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division after six years. The police stated that when this suspect, who had been pursued by several police teams for six years, was apprehended, he was hiding in the Pitipana area of Homagama and telling fortunes online.
This suspect, Anil Bandara, is the main perpetrator of the pyramid scheme operated under the name 'Fast 3 cycle'. He implemented this investment scheme by claiming to offer rooms in 150 ultra-luxury hotels worldwide for a small sum of eighteen thousand rupees. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka also identified this as a pyramid scheme recently.
Investigations have revealed that the amount he defrauded is eighteen hundred thousand rupees (1.8 million rupees). The number of depositors caught in this scam is approximately one hundred thousand, and it is reported that high-ranking businessmen in the country are among them. He lived an extremely luxurious life for a period with the money obtained from the public.
However, during the time he was evading the police and hiding, his luxurious life completely collapsed. Based on information received by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division, when officers went to the relevant location and arrested him, 'Ice' (methamphetamine) drugs were also found in his possession. Investigating officers revealed that all the assets acquired with the defrauded money have now been sold off due to his drug use.
In addition to these financial crimes, the police further state that a warrant has been issued against him under bigamy due to his having entered into two marriages. The person who once acted as a billionaire from star-class hotels, finally fell victim to 'Ice' drugs and was telling fortunes online when he was caught by the law, thus marking the final chapter of this massive pyramid scheme.
