Former Sri Lankan cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara, who earned the respect of the world for his calm and dignified conduct both on and off the cricket field, has reportedly faced an unexpected and shocking experience at Dublin Airport in Ireland. This was due to an alleged incident of racism and discrimination by officials of the renowned airline Ryanair.

The incident was reported when Sangakkara, after celebrating his 49th birthday, specifically on October 28, 2026, arrived at Dublin to travel to Bristol with his wife Yehali and their twin children, Kavith and Swyree, born in 2009. Currently residing in Dorset, UK, he serves as the Cricket Director and Head Coach for the Rajasthan Royals team, a Sky Sports commentator, and also served as the President of the MCC from 2019 to 2021.

In a post on his official X account regarding the incident, he initially stated that the behavior of the Ryanair airport gate officials was shocking, and their manner of speaking, handling of procedures, and threatening nature were unacceptable to any passenger. He also mentioned that it was the first bad experience he had faced in Dublin. Furthermore, on the 29th, he added a clarification, stating that airport officials told them, "People with passports like yours should expect such treatment." Sangakkara alleges that they also threatened to prevent them from boarding the flight, considering them a threat to other passengers, if they argued against that disgusting statement. He emphasized that this was not equal treatment for all and was clearly racism.

However, the statement issued by Ryanair regarding this incident tells a different story. They claim that Sangakkara refused to provide his visa documents when requested by an airport official conducting mandatory immigration checks. But after the relevant checks were completed and his eligibility to travel was confirmed, he was allowed to board the scheduled Dublin-Bristol flight on the same day, the airline states.

Although there is a Common Travel Area (CTA) between Ireland and the United Kingdom, non-British or non-Irish citizens, such as Sri Lankan passport holders, are subject to mandatory document checks at the airport. These checks are a standard procedure, especially at the gates of low-cost airlines. However, Sangakkara has not publicly commented on his visa or residency status, and no CCTV or other evidence related to this incident has been released to the public yet.

Sangakkara's X post has so far received nearly 3.95 million views, over 27,000 likes, and close to 1,100 replies. Renowned British journalist Piers Morgan quoted the post, stating, "I have rarely seen a man as utterly decent and honourable as Kumar. If he makes such a statement, truly shameful behavior must have occurred. I trust Ryanair will address this immediately and appropriately." Furthermore, in response to a statement by Sri Lankan Sanjeeva Weerawarna, who shared his experiences of discrimination while living in Western countries for decades and said he would only travel to Western countries in the future if absolutely necessary, Sangakkara commented, "It's truly shocking to have to experience that."

Cricket fans and Sri Lankans worldwide have strongly believed Sangakkara's accusation, given his usually calm demeanor, and have expressed their support for him. However, some European and Irish commentators point out that low-cost airline officials apply the same rules to all foreigners, and special privileges are not granted based on an individual's social status. While they argue that applying the law equally to everyone is not discrimination, this incident, where even a world-renowned figure involved in a respected sport faced such an experience at a regular airport, has further ignited a heated debate on social media.
