Mr. Prasanna Sanjeewa, the former chairman of the Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority, who was accused of causing a financial loss of over 4.1 million rupees to the government by disregarding tender procedures and issuing passenger transport permits, has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

It has been revealed during investigations that public funds have been misused by completely disregarding the relevant statutes and standard regular tender procedures, and by acting to unduly benefit various parties. With this incident, a serious question has once again arisen regarding the safeguarding of financial discipline and transparency that should exist within state institutions.

The arrested former chairman has now been released on bail after being produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court. Society's strong attention is currently focused on future steps to strictly enforce the law against those who engage in financial irregularities by unduly using their position and state power.
