Flood risk to Peradeniya, Gampola and Nawalapitiya

The Disaster Management Centre states that due to the rapid rise in the water level of the Mahaweli River, there is a threat of minor flooding in the areas of Nawalapitiya, Gampola, and Peradeniya.

The Director General of the Disaster Management Centre, Retired Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda, stated that due to the water level of the Kotmale Gamini Dissanayake Reservoir nearing its maximum limit, steps will be taken to open its spill gates from 3:00 PM today.

With the opening of the reservoir's spill gates, the amount of water flowing into the Mahaweli River will significantly increase, posing a flood risk to many low-lying areas in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Pasbage Korale, Ganga Ihala Korale, Udapalatha, Udunuwara, Yatinuwara, and Gangawata Korale.

Tri-forces and police teams have already been deployed to the relevant risk zones to face any emergency disaster situation, and all necessary arrangements have been made to direct residents to safe places as required.

The Disaster Management Centre further requests the public to immediately inform them via the 117 emergency hotline if any accident or disaster situation is reported.
