The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently preparing to re-arrest a group of inmates involved in the incident where eight prison officers were brutally tortured and murdered inside Negombo Prison, and to file murder charges against them. The identities and details, including names, of approximately 75 inmates suspected of being directly involved in this heinous crime have already been revealed, and special investigations for their arrest are scheduled to be launched within the next few days.
Commenting on this, Acting Inspector General of Police Sanjeeva Dharmaratne stated that the investigations carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department to identify the suspects who murdered the officers are at a very successful level. He also emphasized that maximum legal action would be taken against the perpetrators. Extensive interrogations have already begun, recording statements from all inmates who were present inside Negombo Prison at the time of the incident, in order to accurately identify the individuals who brutally assaulted the prison officers.
To further strengthen the investigations, police officers are conducting an intensive search of the Negombo Prison premises to locate the DVR machines containing footage from the CCTV camera system installed inside the prison. After obtaining statements from the suspect inmates involved in this crime, the police are taking further steps to officially arrest them and bring them before the court on murder charges.
Eight officers attached to the Prison Emergency Tactical Force have lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. According to the post-mortem reports, it has been revealed that they died due to severe attacks and extremely cruel torture by the inmates. The reports also state that some officers had large stones dropped on their heads, crushing their skulls, while others were brutally tortured with broom handles inserted into their mouths and anuses. A great deal of detailed information, including the names of the inmates who led and participated in this attack, is currently being obtained by the investigating officers.
