Due to the spread of dengue fever among students of the University of Colombo, academic activities in several faculties have been arranged to be conducted online and hybrid methods for a period of one week. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Indika Karunatilake, stated that it was decided to conduct lectures in the Faculties of Arts, Law, Management, Education, and Science through these communication technology methods.
Currently, 71 students at the university have contracted dengue fever, and five of them are hospitalized and receiving treatment. As the majority of reported patients belong to the Faculties of Science and Arts, the university administration has made this decision, focusing on the health and safety of students as well as ensuring the continuity of academic activities. Since rest is an essential factor for recovery from dengue fever, this alternative lecture method has been introduced to allow affected students to focus on their health without disrupting their academic work.
Authorities have already taken several steps to control the spread of dengue within the university premises, and the health condition of hospitalized students is continuously and closely monitored. The Vice-Chancellor, confirming that the current situation is under control, urges the student community to seek medical advice without delay if any student develops fever symptoms.
Professor Indika Karunatilake specifically emphasized that the University of Colombo has not suspended lectures due to this health situation. He further stated that there is no intention or preparation to cripple the university in the future either.
