Prison sources state that Katuwellewatte Suresh, a member of an organized underworld gang and a key suspect who led the recent brutal riot at Negombo Prison, has sustained serious injuries after being severely attacked by another group inside his cell. It is reported that this assault, suspected to have been carried out by a rival gang involved in drug trafficking, has caused severe damage to his spine, and he is currently unable to walk.
Although some false reports on social media claimed Suresh had died, no such incident occurred. The conflict at Negombo Prison, stemming from drug trafficking, which led to this situation, began on the 5th, resulting in the deaths of two prisoners and injuries to 34 others. Not stopping there, on the following day, the 6th, a 10-member team from the Special Tactical Force, summoned from Welikada Prison at the request of prisoners to meet relatives and obtain food, was also brutally attacked by the inmates. During this incident, prison officers were taken hostage and subjected to inhumane torture, with some officers being killed on the spot and others sustaining serious injuries by the rioters. This second day of conflict ultimately claimed 27 lives.
As stated by a senior prison official, this large-scale riot within the prison was orchestrated from behind the scenes by Katuwellewatte Suresh, a close associate of the notorious underworld figure Kehelbaddara Padma. Although a gang of 13, including Rocky from Negombo, had planned this entire conspiracy, surprisingly, none of them sustained even a scratch at the end of the conflict. Investigating officers suspect that they are also behind the double murders that occurred on the first day at the prison, and this Suresh faces numerous serious criminal charges, including drug trafficking, robberies, and an incident ten years ago where he assaulted and tied up a monk and an assistant at a temple and damaged a stupa.
Following the incident, as a precautionary measure, authorities took steps to immediately transfer several high-risk inmates, including Katuwellewatte Suresh and Rocky from Negombo, to the Boossa High-Security Prison in Galle, while others, including inmates opposed to drugs, were dispersed to various prisons across the island. However, the police have now launched a broad investigation into the mysterious deaths of three inmates who were transferred to Boossa, Angunukolapelessa, and Welikada prisons after these transfers. Prison administration states that the two inmates sent to Boossa and Angunukolapelessa died after being hospitalized due to sudden illnesses, and the inmate transferred to Welikada Prison committed suicide.
Meanwhile, the Committee for Protecting Prisoners' Rights has issued a statement rejecting the claims of prison authorities, alleging that inmates transferred from Negombo were subjected to inhumane torture by officers in those prisons. The committee states that the death at Welikada Prison was a result of severe beatings, not suicide, and urges an immediate halt to retaliation against prisoners. According to police reports, 37-year-old J.K.N. Buddhika Perera, a resident of Katugoda, died at Karapitiya Hospital after being brought to Boossa Prison. Furthermore, among the 120 inmates transferred from Negombo to Angunukolapelessa Prison, an as-yet-unidentified inmate also died after experiencing chest pain during registration and being hospitalized. Post-mortem examinations and police investigations into these deaths are ongoing.
