An application seeking permission for the wife and son of former State Intelligence Service chief, retired Major General Suresh Salley, to visit him daily, has been rejected by the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court. Mr. Salley, who is currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department under detention orders obtained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, is presently receiving residential treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.
Rejecting this application, Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena pointed out that the court does not have the legal authority to issue such permission as the suspect is in detention under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.Following this decision by the court, both his wife and lawyer Asith Siriwardena have submitted written requests to the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Shani Abeysekera, asking for daily access to meet Mr. Suresh Salley, who is currently hospitalized. The lawyer emphasized that it is his professional obligation to ensure the welfare and fundamental rights of his client. Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal has extended the further consideration of the writ petition filed by Mr. Suresh Salley against his detention and seeking the annulment of the detention order, until July 10th.
Meanwhile, a silent protest was organized in the Negombo area, urging for more systematic and strengthened investigations into the Easter Sunday bomb attacks and demanding proper justice for the victims. Members of victim families from Katuwapitiya Church, people affected by the Easter attacks, and a group of civil activists jointly held this protest, and later they also visited the Satyagraha site operating in front of the Colombo Fort Railway Station. There, the victimized people appreciated the measures taken by the current government and expressed their support.
