An Angunakolapelessa Pradeshiya Sabha candidate of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has died due to a stabbing that occurred when an argument between two parties escalated at a wedding ceremony in the Weeraketiya area. Weeraketiya Police state that this candidate, who sustained serious injuries in the clash that occurred the day before yesterday (27), died after being admitted to the hospital.
The person who was unfortunately murdered in this manner is a 30-year-old youth named Supun Chinthaka Kodithuwakku, who resided in the Julgaha Koratuwa, Kumbukmulla area. According to preliminary police investigations, it has been revealed that the suspect who committed this crime and the deceased SJB Pradeshiya Sabha candidate are cousins.
Explaining the background to the incident, the police state that both of them had attended a wedding ceremony held in the Medamulana, Kinchigune area, where the first argument between the two parties had occurred. After that, the suspect and the SJB candidate went to another location in the Kinchigune area and consumed alcohol again. Police investigations have revealed that during another dispute that arose there, the suspect's mother was assaulted with a helmet.
After this incident, around 7:30 PM that night, the deceased candidate went to the suspect's house, where a heated argument ensued between them again. Due to the anger that arose at that moment, the suspect attacked the Pradeshiya Sabha candidate with a knife found in the house, and he, having sustained serious injuries, died after being admitted to the hospital.
Under the instructions of Senior Superintendent of Police Nayan Dehigama, who is in charge of the Tangalle Division, a team of officers including Weeraketiya Police OIC Chief Police Inspector Jagath Kumara are conducting further investigations into this matter.
