India 'A' team managed to win a magnificent championship by defeating Sri Lanka 'A' team by 66 runs in the final match of the Tri-Nation 'A' team cricket tournament held in Dambulla. 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who failed to showcase his characteristic skills throughout the entire tournament, became the main architect of India's victory by playing a rapid innings in this decisive match held on Sunday (June 21).
Batting first at the invitation of Sri Lanka 'A' team, who won the toss, opening batsman Suryavanshi managed to record the fastest half-century in List 'A' cricket history for India 'A' team. He took only 11 balls for this. Launching his attack with fours and sixes against Mohammed Shiraz's bowling, he added 26 runs to the scoreboard in Shiraz's third over itself. Suryavanshi, who also launched a fierce attack against Dulaj Samuditha, brought the team's score to the 50-run mark by the end of the third over of the Indian innings.
It was noteworthy that his first 54 runs were scored solely from fours and sixes, and he also made sure to take maximum advantage of two dropped catch opportunities by the Sri Lankan fielders. Suryavanshi's brutal assault overshadowed the quick start provided by Priyansh Arya from the other end, and the Indian innings crossed the 100-run mark in the 7th over itself. Suryavanshi, who was close to equaling the record for the fastest century in List 'A' cricket history by attacking Kugadas Mathulan's bowling, was dismissed after scoring 94 runs from 29 balls, including 11 fours and 8 sixes, by giving a catch to the fielder in the mid-off region. When he was dismissed in the 9th over, the Indian scoreboard read 132 runs.
After Priyansh Arya's dismissal, the pace of the Indian innings slowed down somewhat, and Ruturaj Gaikwad and captain Tilak Varma tried to stabilize the innings. Gaikwad, who initially scored slowly with 10 runs from 24 balls, later increased his scoring rate by hitting a six. The 84-run partnership between these two paved the way for India to reach a large total, and Gaikwad was dismissed for 40 runs. Captain Tilak Varma, who recorded his fourth half-century of the tournament in 70 balls, failed to convert it into a big innings and was dismissed for 67 runs, while Kumar Kushagra scored 36 runs, providing strength to the innings.
Although the scoring rate slowed down again in the latter part of the Indian innings due to the dismissal of three batsmen, including Suryansh Shede, within three overs, Vipraj Nigam and Anukul Roy together boosted the score. Although Nishant Sindhu was dismissed for a low score, Anukul Roy, who was active in the last few overs, scored a quick 39 runs from 15 balls. Roy managed to snatch 24 runs with 3 sixes in the final over bowled by Kugadas Mathulan, and at the end of the stipulated 50 overs, India 'A' team created a massive scoreboard of 377 runs for 9 wickets. For Sri Lanka in bowling, Vanuja Sahan took 2 wickets for 39 runs.
Although Sri Lanka 'A' team, playing the reply innings, got a quick start from Niroshan Dickwella, Yash Thakur managed to dismiss Avishka Fernando, who was among the runs, for 3 runs. Subsequently, Thakur managed to put Sri Lanka's top order in trouble by dismissing both Dickwella (25) and Nuwanidu Fernando (21). Thereafter, Sadeera Samarawickrama, who joined the crease, scored quickly against Ashok Sharma's bowling, and although he tried to keep the Sri Lankan team in the match by scoring a half-century in 41 balls, he was dismissed for 52 runs.
Although Ravindu Fernando got a good start by hitting a few fours, he was dismissed by giving a catch to Tilak Varma, and with captain Sahan Arachchige also getting out for a low score, Sri Lanka's hopes began to fade. However, Vanuja Sahan (62 off 69 balls) and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth (39 off 34 balls) fought back by building a 77-run partnership for the 8th wicket. Although the scoring rate was at a decent level, it was not enough to reach the target, and Anukul Roy broke that partnership by dismissing Viyaskanth.
Vanuja Sahan, attempting to increase the scoring rate, tried to play a reverse sweep and was dismissed by a ball from Vipraj Nigam. Thereafter, Dulaj Samuditha hit two sixes, taking the Sri Lankan scoreboard beyond the 300-run mark, but Anukul Roy and Vipraj Nigam together took the remaining wickets of the Sri Lankan innings, securing victory for India. Accordingly, Sri Lanka 'A' team was restricted to 311 runs in 47.1 overs, and India 'A' team claimed the championship of the Tri-Nation tournament with a magnificent victory of 66 runs. In bowling for India, Yash Thakur took 3 wickets for 45 runs, Vipraj Nigam took 3 wickets for 60 runs, and Anukul Roy took 2 wickets for 42 runs.
