The Kandy Magistrate's Court has ordered the remand of a suspect until the 9th, who is accused of stabbing and killing a woman with whom he had an illicit affair, in a house belonging to his legal wife in the Aladeniya, Yatihagalagala area, and robbing a gold chain she possessed.
Against the backdrop of the victim's son having filed a complaint with the Rattota Police that his mother had been missing since the 17th, the police were able to discover her decomposed body under a bed in the aforementioned Yatihagalagala house on the 26th. The owner of the house, the suspect's wife, is currently living separately from her husband in the Menikhinna area. When she visited her house with another woman, a strong foul odor emanating from the house prompted a search, during which she discovered the body and informed the 119 Police Emergency Call Unit.
The front door of the house was found locked from the inside, and the homeowner observed that the lock on the back door had been broken and a wire nail inserted into it. During an extensive investigation conducted by the Aladeniya Police, who summoned officers from the Kandy Criminal Investigation Laboratory, the K9 unit, and the Fingerprint Division, a pair of women's shoes, a handbag, and several pieces of paper with multiple phone numbers written on them were found. Through this information, investigators were able to confirm the identity of the deceased woman.
With the assistance of the Matale Headquarters Police, the suspect was apprehended in the Matale area. During questioning, he stated that he had come to the house with the deceased woman on the 17th. He confessed to the police that after an argument between them escalated, he attacked and killed her with a sharp weapon, and then took the gold chain from her neck.
The gold chain stolen by the suspect was taken into police custody while it was pawned at a pawn center in Matale. The mobile phone allegedly used by the murdered woman was also found discarded in a jungle area near the house where the crime occurred.
The woman brutally murdered in this manner has been identified as sixty-year-old Velukaliammal, a resident of the Pitakanda Estate in Alwatta.
After the post-mortem examination was conducted at the Kandy National Hospital, an open verdict was issued, and arrangements were made to hand over the body to the family relatives. Further investigations into this matter are being led by a team headed by the OIC of Aladeniya Police Station, under the instructions of senior police officers including Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Mr. Lalith Pathinayake.
