The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors' Association states that 117 dansals out of those organized island-wide for this year's Vesak week had minor shortcomings. Mr. Chamil Muthukuda, the chief secretary of the association, stated that a total of 12,423 dansals had been registered for this year's Vesak festival season.
A team of nearly two thousand Public Health Inspectors was deployed island-wide to monitor all these registered dansals. The secretary stated that steps were taken to provide necessary hygienic advice to the organizing committees of dansals where certain shortcomings were identified, and after rectifying those shortcomings, the public was given the opportunity to resume them. It was also mentioned that indigestion has been reported due to these unhygienic foods.
In addition to dansals, mobile sweet stalls, restaurants, hotels, and beverage selling points operating around sacred places in various parts of the island have also been subjected to strict inspections by Public Health Inspectors from time to time.
Arrangements have been made to continuously monitor all types of food and beverage stalls, sweet shops, and dansals until the end of the Vesak week period. Mr. Chamil Muthukuda further emphasized that this hygienic program is being implemented in accordance with the special announcement and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health to control the risk of various infectious diseases spreading.
