Indian 'A' team captain Tilak Varma has come forward to defend young batsman Vaibhav Suryawanshi amidst severe criticism faced by him during the 2026 'A' team triangular cricket series held in Sri Lanka. Varma states that the 15-year-old player should be given sufficient time to adapt to senior-level cricket and requests spectators and critics not to place unnecessary expectations and pressure on him.
Suryawanshi is currently a subject of intense discussion due to his performance and agitated behavior on the field throughout the current tournament. After a thrilling victory in the super over against the Sri Lanka 'A' team in the previous match, the Sri Lanka team managed to take the lead in the points table. During that time, as the players were heading to the dressing room, a heated exchange of words occurred between the two sides. Suryawanshi, agitated by an interruption from a Sri Lankan player, went up to that player and pushed him. Although the umpires and other players immediately intervened and controlled the situation, it is reported that due to this impulsive behavior, he will likely face disciplinary action, such as a 50% fine of his match fee.
Vaibhav Suryawanshi's performance throughout this current tournament has been somewhat inconsistent, scoring 117 runs in 4 matches he participated in, maintaining an average of 29.25 and a strike rate of 153.94. However, his remarkable performance with fearless attacking batting in the recently concluded 2026 IPL tournament earned him a chance to be included in the Indian national team. Accordingly, he is scheduled to tour Ireland and England next month for the T20 International series, where he is highly likely to make his international cricket debut.
Supporting the young player, captain Tilak Varma stated that the team management will not try to change Suryawanshi's natural playing style, as young players need freedom to reach their peak performance. Varma points out that although transitioning from Under-19 cricket to representing the senior team through the IPL is a huge challenging transformation, Suryawanshi possesses an innate talent that enables him to win matches on his own. Varma further added that he advised Suryawanshi to enjoy the game without any pressure and to trust his strengths, and that as a captain, he is always ready to provide any support he needs.
The crucial final match of the triangular cricket series between the Indian 'A' team and the Sri Lanka 'A' team is scheduled to be held today, Sunday. All eyes will once again be on Suryawanshi in this decisive match, and the team management has high hopes that he will channel his impulsiveness in a positive direction and play an excellent innings for the team.
