The world's first new treatment that can delay the onset of Type 1 diabetes by up to three years has now been approved by the UK's National Health Service (NHS). This drug, known as 'Teplizumab', has received approval from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK, and has been hailed by Diabetes UK as the beginning of a new era in diabetes treatment history.
Manufactured by Sanofi under the brand name Tzield, this drug can be administered to children aged eight and above, as well as adults, who are in the early stages before symptoms appear. It is reported that approximately 400,000 people in the UK suffer from Type 1 diabetes, where the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
Experts point out that this one-time treatment, administered intravenously once a day for about 30 minutes over 14 days, will give patients extra time to manage their diabetes and lead a normal life. The institution estimates that approximately 1,100 patients will be eligible to receive this treatment in the first year.
