Although many consider the appearance of floaters or specks in front of the eyes to be a normal part of aging, doctors warn that in some cases, this could be a precursor to a serious vision impairment. Lucy Scoonhoven, a woman living in London, also experienced such a condition, which severely impacted her daily life and professional activities.

Initially, it appeared as a few small specks, but later it spread across her field of vision, starting to look like a spiderweb.

As we age, the jelly-like substance inside the eye becomes more liquid, causing its collagen fibers to clump together and form small knots. When these knots cast shadows on the retina, we perceive small specks or thread-like objects floating in front of our eyes. While this is a normal condition in most cases, it is crucial to seek immediate medical advice if symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, seeing lightning-like flashes of light, or experiencing darkness in the peripheral vision occur. This could be a precursor to an emergency condition like a retinal tear or detachment.

Some individuals may have an increased risk due to hereditary factors or conditions like diabetes. Doctors state that nearsighted individuals, in particular, may develop this problem sooner due to differences in their eye structure. For these patients, an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan can accurately diagnose the eye's condition, and if the condition is severe, a 'vitrectomy' surgery can remove the substance from the eye and restore vision.

During the surgery, a large portion of the jelly-like substance in the eye is removed and replaced with a clear fluid. However, the surgery Lucy underwent was very expensive, and as a side effect, she later faced an increased risk of developing cataracts. Although many people who are distressed by floaters are advised to learn to live without focusing on the condition, if the condition becomes unbearable, it is advisable to seek medical treatment.
