On the 9th, a large-scale factory located in the Homagama Industrial Zone, which produced substandard iron rods without the mandatory Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification, was sealed by the Consumer Affairs Authority. This sudden raid was launched by the authorities without any prior notice, following confidential information received by the Consumer Affairs Authority.
Investigations conducted at the site revealed that this factory had been subtly and continuously operating for a long period of about three years, evading the law. It was further confirmed that they had specifically produced and distributed substandard 6mm steel rods to the public along with their other finished products.
The use of construction materials released irresponsibly to the market without any standards creates a risk of building collapse, directly endangering the lives and property of the public. For this reason, officials took immediate action to seal the factory and are currently working to ensure consumer protection by taking strict legal action against such fraudulent entities and further expanding future investigations related to the incident.
