The swearing-in ceremony of Thalapathy Vijay, also known as C. Joseph Vijay, founder of the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party, who was set to be sworn in as Chief Minister after the 2026 Tamil Nadu state election, has currently been delayed.

This party, launched in 2024 as an alternative to the two main parties with an anti-corruption and youth-focused political message, succeeded in becoming the largest single party in this election by winning 108 seats out of the 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. However, they have not yet been able to secure the simple majority of 118 seats required to form a government.

In this election, Vijay contested and won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies, and according to the law, he must resign from one of these seats. Accordingly, the effective number of seats for the TVK party will temporarily decrease to 107, and at the same time, the total number of seats in the assembly will become 233, changing the number of seats required for a majority to 117. The powerful parties in the state, DMK, secured approximately 59 seats, and AIADMK secured approximately 47 seats. A notable event is the defeat of DMK leader M.K. Stalin in the Kolathur constituency. Additionally, the Congress party won 5 seats, PMK 4 seats, VCK, CPI, CPM, and IUML parties won 2 seats each, and DMDK and BJP parties won one seat each.

Although all arrangements were made for the swearing-in ceremony to be held grandly with the participation of a large crowd at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Thursday, May 7th, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar (R.V. Arlekar) has indefinitely postponed the event. The Governor cited the failure to provide sufficient evidence to confirm the majority as the reason. On May 6th, Congress leaders visited the TVK headquarters in Paniyoor and submitted letters pledging the support of their 5 MLAs. Following this, Vijay met the Governor at Lok Bhavan and asserted his right to form a government. That evening, TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna also met the Governor, but the Governor strongly emphasized that letters demonstrating the majority must be provided before a date can be set.

The TVK party currently holds approximately 112 seats with the support of the Congress, but there is still a shortfall of about 5 seats for a majority. The IUML and AIADMK parties have already declared that they will not extend their support, while VCK, CPI, CPM, and DMDK parties have not yet announced a firm decision. Although some parties speculate that the BJP, which won one seat, might offer support, there has been no confirmation regarding this. The TVK party is currently holding discussions with parties from both rival camps. Political analysts and party supporters, who state that delaying the formation of a government is unfair, point to Supreme Court precedents regarding providing the largest single party an opportunity to demonstrate a majority in the assembly. Due to this situation, a certain tension has arisen within the TVK camp, replacing the previous victorious enthusiasm at the headquarters, and it is expected that it will take a few more days for stable alliances to form.
