It is now evident that the death of Mr. Ranga Nishantha, Assistant Director of the Ministry of Finance, being a 'suicide' and 'not a murder' during the post-mortem examination, has become a problem for a certain group that was hoping to gain political advantage. To somehow prove that this was a murder committed with government patronage, a group is currently creating various fake news stories and building an argument.

Former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila held a press conference on this matter yesterday (4), strongly stating that it was suspicious and that even the medical board that conducted the post-mortem examination had given its decision politically. To intensify his suspicion, Udaya Gammanpila also published a document on his Facebook page yesterday, claiming that Ranga's deceased wife had requested that the death be treated as suspicious. However, upon examination, it shows that it is a standard official letter issued by the Magistrate for a post-mortem examination after an initial inquiry, and the original letter from the Director General of Health regarding the appointment of a medical board for this matter. In a context where there was no record whatsoever of Ranga's wife rejecting these examination results, Mr. Udaya Gammanpila's continuous argumentation on this matter is problematic.

Former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila stated at a press conference held yesterday (04) that he rejects the post-mortem report issued regarding the death of Mr. Ranga Nishantha, Assistant Director of the Ministry of Finance, and that an independent committee should conduct a re-investigation into the said death.

The committee comprising specialist forensic medical officers Messrs. Ilangarathna Banda, Ajith Jayasena, Sampath Senathunga, and Gamini Dissanayake has concluded that the death occurred due to excessive bleeding from cut wounds, and that it is most likely a suicide. However, amidst some parties creating false information to build a narrative that this was a murder committed with government patronage, Mr. Gammanpila has also argued on his Facebook account by publishing a document, claiming that the deceased officer's wife expressed suspicion about the death. However, it has now been confirmed that the said document is merely the order issued by the Magistrate for a post-mortem examination and the standard official letters sent by the Director General of Health regarding the appointment of a medical board, and there is no official record whatsoever of the wife rejecting the examination results.

Mr. Gammanpila pointed out that since Mr. Ranga Nishantha was the person who made the initial complaint to the CID regarding a computer fraud, his mysterious death is a severe impediment to those investigations. He stated that it is problematic for the medical committee to hastily conclude that this was a suicide based merely on conjecture, without conducting any examinations regarding Pathology and Toxicology. The former MP strongly questioned the drawing of conclusions before confirming through the Government Analyst whether a poison was administered to the body, causing unconsciousness, after which someone else inflicted cut wounds and placed the knife in his hand, and whether the bloodstains on the knife or clothes belonged to someone else. He also cast doubt on the police media spokesperson calling it a suicide even before the post-mortem examination was completed.

He stated that it is the medical opinion that cutting three major arteries instead of common suicide methods existing in the world is not practical, and that after cutting one hand, with the intense pain and bleeding, there wouldn't be enough mental fortitude left to cut the veins in both legs. Mr. Gammanpila questioned whether the four doctors who conducted the examination, three of whom had postgraduate degrees from countries like America and Australia, learned a method of reaching quick conclusions without proper examination of evidence while abroad.

Mr. Gammanpila accused that there appeared to be strong bias in the appointment of the said post-mortem examination committee, stating that two of its members had been active JVP (Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna) activists during their university days, and one doctor was a medical college contemporary and friend of the current Speaker. He emphasized that he completely rejects this report, based on the appointment of a committee consisting of friends and party loyalists and the failure to conduct a comprehensive investigation, at a time when public suspicion against the government has arisen. To dispel the existing suspicion regarding this matter, former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila proposed to the government that a second post-mortem examination should be immediately conducted through a committee comprising three of the most senior forensic medical officers currently in Sri Lanka.

It is possible that Udaya publicized a common letter exchanged before a post-mortem examination for a death in this manner to generate a different meaning. It was also observed that comments were blocked on that post.
