Four employees of a women's underwear manufacturing factory located in Horana have been arrested by the Panadura Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit for stealing a stock of fabric worth approximately 2.3 million rupees and a stock of garments made from those fabrics from the same institution. In addition to the fabric cut for sewing clothes, a stock of finished garments prepared under different brand names using the same fabric was also taken into police custody from the suspects, and a motorcycle used to transport the stolen fabric was also taken into police custody.
The police confirm that among those arrested in connection with this theft are a fabric cutter, a distribution officer, and two lorry drivers, aged 27, 32, 37, and 55, all of whom worked at the same factory. Preliminary investigations have revealed that these individuals, residents of Piliyandala, Weerawila, and Dikhenapura, have been working at this factory in Munagama, Horana, and have been meticulously orchestrating this theft for over a year.
Investigations commenced following a complaint made on the 9th by the factory owner, a resident of Piliyandala. Based on information received by the OIC of the Panadura Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit that a stolen stock of fabric was being transported by motorcycle, the first suspect was arrested in the Maharagama area. Interrogations of this suspect, a resident of Weerawila, led the police to successfully apprehend the other three suspects involved in the theft.
According to investigations, it has been revealed that during the cutting of fabric for garments at the factory, the suspects systematically separated a portion of it and secretly took it out of the factory. It has been further revealed that these stolen fabric stocks were sent to a location in the Maharagama area and sewn into finished garments under a different brand name. The police have also uncovered that these stolen fabric stocks were initially hidden at the home of a suspect residing in Munagama and later transported to a lodging in the Piliyandala area.
