A fire broke out on Sunday (17) due to a drone attack on an electricity generator located outside the internal security perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. However, no personal injuries have been reported from this incident, and authorities confirm that radiation levels around the plant remain completely normal.

The attack did not disrupt the plant's daily operations, and its third unit (Unit 3) was temporarily supplied with continuous electricity by emergency diesel generators.

It is reported that three drones entered from the western border near Saudi Arabia, two of which were successfully destroyed by the UAE's air defense systems. However, the remaining drone crashed into an electricity generator, causing this fire, which fire departments were able to control very quickly. The Abu Dhabi Media Office and the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) have officially confirmed that this fire was limited only to the area outside the plant's internal security perimeter.

This attack has had no impact on the plant's radiological safety, and all four of its units continue to operate normally. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is closely monitoring the situation and remains in constant contact with UAE authorities. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has called for maximum military restraint around nuclear sites and emphasized that military activities threatening nuclear safety are absolutely unacceptable.

No party has yet claimed responsibility for this attack, and UAE officials have not publicly accused anyone. It is noteworthy that this attack occurred during a very delicate ceasefire agreed upon on April 8 in the American-Israeli and Iranian war, which began on February 28, 2026. Iran remains silent on this incident, and the UAE Ministry of Defense is conducting further investigations amidst the tense situation in the region, including recent attacks on Gulf states.

The Barakah power plant, located in a coastal desert area 175 to 225 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi, is considered the Arab world's first and only commercial nuclear power plant. This massive project, built by South Korea's KEPCO company with four APR-1400 type reactors, supplies approximately 25% of the UAE's total electricity needs (40 terawatt-hours per year). This prevents the release of 22.4 million tons of carbon dioxide into the environment annually, an environmental benefit equivalent to removing 4.8 million cars from the roads. With the commissioning of its fourth unit in 2024, the plant reached full commercial operation, significantly contributing to the state policy of diversifying energy sources away from fossil fuels and achieving zero-carbon emission targets.

This is the first reported attack targeting the Barakah plant amidst the ongoing conflict related to Iran, clearly demonstrating the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure in the region. This incident has sparked serious discussions within the international community regarding the effectiveness of drone defense systems for nuclear sites and the risk of conventional conflicts escalating into nuclear threats.
