The four players of the Sri Lanka Under-19 cricket team, who are accused in connection with the incident of secretly video recording the bathing scenes of a group of female doctors using a mobile phone at a well-known hotel in Colombo 5, have informed the court that they are ready to settle the matter. This was stated by the lawyers representing them when the case related to this incident was called before the Colombo Magistrate's Court.
The Narahenpita Police are conducting investigations into this incident, and when the case was called, police officers were unable to submit the relevant reports to the court. Due to this, the Magistrate has ordered the police to complete the investigations entirely and submit the relevant observation reports to the court before the next court session.
The first and second suspect players, who face the main charge of video recording the female doctors, are two players studying at the two well-known schools, Trinity College Kandy and Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa. Senior Counsel Anton Senanayake, appearing for them, informed the court that the defense is willing to settle this dispute with the agreement of both parties. However, President's Counsel Nalinda Indatissa, appearing for the aggrieved female doctors, emphasized that no advice or agreement has yet been received from his clients regarding such a settlement, and that clear instructions from the complainant party must be obtained before taking such a step.
A group of female doctors staying at the Janaki Hotel in Narahenpita to attend a residential workshop organized by the Ministry of Health were secretly filmed bathing using mobile phones. The accused were these students who had come to the said hotel for a cricket training camp. It was reported that evidence had been received that they had meticulously recorded these scenes by making holes in the hotel bathrooms. Following a complaint made by a young female doctor after she noticed some filming taking place inside her bathroom, these suspects were arrested after examining the hotel's security camera footage (CCTV). Meanwhile, Senior Counsel Ian Fernando, appearing for the third and fourth suspects accused of aiding and abetting this act, pointed out that the charges filed against his clients are baseless. He questioned before the court how all four suspect players could have carried out such a video recording together using a single mobile phone, stating that there is an immediately apparent incomprehensible problem regarding this.
The court has decided to postpone the magisterial inquiry related to these four suspect players, who are currently out on bail, until July 13th.
